Aroha mai Aroha atu

Updated: Apr 20, 2023

In creating this new image, I have reflected on significant women in my life; they are wise, courageous, tender, faithful and truthful. They are how I imagine many women in the Bible to be, such as Mary (the mother of God), Elizabeth, Anne, Mary of Magdala, Ruth, and more.

When imagining Mary and other biblical women, it’s easy to get sucked into the traditional European young pious pale images. The truth is, Mary, would have been at least in her 50s when she died. She had life experience, wrinkles, and probably had tough hands to boot. As an older woman, she and others are who I turn, to be with in prayer.

Aroha mai Aroha atu is a Māori phrase that means love received, love returned. For all those incredible women of faith that we know and love, this one is for them—thank you for your love, deep faith, and trust in God—it's returned in gratitude.

For all who grieve and are grateful, this one is for you. Those all those who are struggling to trust, this one is for you. For all those who are lost, this is for you... You are not alone. For my mother, Godmother, Sisters, friends, and beyond gender, this is for and with you.

I hope this gift connects. This image is available to purchase as a high-quality print or as a downloadable image. To honour the month of May as dedicated to Mary, the images are free to download in the months of April / May. Please share and use it in your personal prayers and/or at school or in your parish.

Thank you to all the women (and to all humans) of faith

Aroha mai Aroha atu
