175 Logo - St Mary's College

It was an honour to be recently asked to design a new logo mark for St Mary’s College in Ponsonby, Auckland. In 2025, the college will celebrate a significant milestone. 175 years ago, the Sisters of Mercy planted seeds, arriving in Auckland. As principal Sarah Dwan notes, the Sisters were led by Mother Cecilia Maher "because the local Māori had asked Bishop Pompallier for some wahine tapu to teach their children”. With time, roots have grown, sharing Catholic education and creating a community. And now, this continues to bear fruit...
In terms of approaching the design process, as with any project, it's crucial that the design is created with a purpose. Thus, the logo design was created using the classic three W’s :
Why are we doing it? – what is the hope
Who is it for? – target market
What will it be used for? – web adverts, T-shirts, brochures etc.
It was designed firstly by hand sketching, then digitally refining the logo with multiple versions. Notably, the logo mark was done in conjunction with some other design work (stay tuned for more after November). As such, the logo includes the school colours, typeface, and design details that tell the College’s story. For example, Māori, Pacifica elements, and small circles to symbolise seeds from the Parable of the Sower (Luke 8:4-15).
The logo was completed in January 2025 and is currently being implemented by the College.
I am truly grateful to have worked on this project. I hope this logo mark creates connection, hope, and inspires more seeds to be planted through Catholic education here in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond…
Alleluia and Happy Easter
Much love and prayer
~ Jane
