Feeding of the Four Thousand
Scripture shows us that Jesus was a deeply inclusive man. He lead with his heart "my heart goes out to all the people."
The key word here is 'all'. He was radical and included everyone, especially women and children. In a sense they were all his disciples (Saint Mary Magdalene, as one example).
As he gave thanks and broke the bread in this parable I imagine Jesus giving this 'bread' to say a woman from Africa and perhaps a young boy from the Philippines. He is certainly thankful for all cultures and journeys with us all. With imagination we can see this parable alive in our lives today. The definition of faith calls us to trust God, when we do this God will feed four thousand, four hundred thousand, four million and beyond. The number is not relevant; to know and trust Jesus is to be full.
Scripture: Matthew 15: 32-38 [ Feeding of the Four Thousand ]
Jesus called together the disciples and said, “My heart goes out to all the people. By now they have been with us three days and have had nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry – they might collapse on the way home.” The disciples said to Jesus, “Where could we get enough food in this deserted place to feed such a crowd?” Jesus asked, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” “Seven, they replied and a few small fish.”
Then he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, then broke them and gave them to the disciples, who gave them to the crowds. All ate until they were full. When they gathered up the left over fragments, they filled seven baskets. Four thousand families were fed.
